Cristopher Sanchez produced a tremendous campaign in 2025 for the Philadelphia Phillies. The left-handed pitcher produced his best MLB season to finish as the runner-up for the National League Cy Young Award. Sanchez was, naturally, the obvious choice to be the Opening Day starter for the Phillies.
The Philadelphia Phillies have reached an agreement for a six-year, $107 million contract extension with Cristopher Sanchez, as per Matt Gelb of The Athletic. This includes the sum that the Phillies owe him for the 2026 campaign. The deal keeps Sanchez tied to the club until the 2032 season with a club option for the following year.
“On Sunday, the Phillies ripped up the deal and rewarded Sanchez as such. He agreed to a new six-year deal that will guarantee him $107 million, according to a league source,” Gelb reported on Sunday.

“Sanchez had been signed through 2028 with two affordable team options for 2029 and 2030. Now, the 29-year-old pitcher is under contract through 2032. The Phillies will hold a club option for 2033. The $107 million in guaranteed money includes the $3.5 million Sánchez was set to make in 2026.”
The news comes as a major surprise, as Sanchez is currently in the second season of the four-year, $22.5 million deal he signed with the Phillies in 2024. With two club options attached to it, the Phillies could have retained him at just $47 million for the next five years.
Following his dominant 2025 season, the Philadelphia Phillies’ front office clearly felt Cristopher Sanchez deserved a much more lucrative deal. His agent, Gene Mato, credited Phillies general manager John Middleton and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski for initiating the move.
“John and Dave stepped up and decided to reward Cristopher with a deal more than commensurate with his abilities even though the club still had five years of control at minimal dollars,” Mato reportedly said in a text message to The Athletic. “It’s really unprecedented.”
Sanchez arrived on a trade deal from the Tampa Bay Rays a couple of years before his debut in 2021. He established a spot in the Phillies’ rotation in 2021 before earning an All-Star selection and a top-10 finish in the Cy Young race. The 29-year-old southpaw led the MLB with 8.0 bWAR last season. He pitched 202.0 innings over 32 starts with a 2.50 ERA and 212 strikeouts.
