The Philadelphia Phillies are off to a middling start this season, entering Friday with a 6-6 record. They've had the fortune of avoiding any key injuries this early in the season, however; there was a brief scare during Tuesday's contest against the San Francisco Giants, in which catcher JT Realmuto took a Rafael Devers' foul ball to the foot in the first. He finished out the inning but was pinch-hit for when he was due up to bat.
Initially, Realmuto thought the worst, saying that he thought he might have broken his foot on the play (h/t Todd Zolecki, MLB.com) . Backup catcher Rafael Marchan started in his place on Wednesday, and then the club had a day off on Thursday. When Friday's lineup against the Arizona Diamondbacks was announced, Realmuto was back in it.

It's an incredibly encouraging development for Realmuto and the Phillies, as they would not be playing him if he suffered any sort of structural damage in his foot on the play. As recently as Wednesday, Realmuto was still unsure on if he'd be able to play in Friday's contest (h/t Todd Zolecki, MLB.com).
This early in the season, it would be hasty to assign too much significance to anyone's offensive statistics as there is such a small sample size behind them. That said, Realmuto was off to a great start prior to his injury; through 32 plate appearances, the 35-year-old veteran was getting on base at a .406 clip, which contributed to his very solid 127 OPS+.
If he is able to sustain his current production, Realmuto is on track for his best offensive performance since the 2022 season.

After spending a majority of the offseason without a team, Realmuto finally reached an agreement on a three-year, $45 million contract with the Phillies on January 20, 2026, just weeks before pitchers and catchers would report to spring training.
In a way, Realmuto's return to Philadelphia felt inevitable. The Oklahoma native established himself as one of the league's best catchers with the Miami Marlins, but he built upon his budding reputation in Philadelphia, earning down-ballot MVP votes in two of his seven full seasons with the team along with multiple All-Star appearances, Silver Slugger awards, and Gold Glove awards.
The Phillies are clearly confident that he is back to full health, or they would not have put him in Friday's lineup over Marchan. If any issues arise for Realmuto in his return to action and necessitate a trip to the injured list, however, long-time backup catcher Garrett Stubbs would likely be called up from Triple-A.
