Phillies Make Key MLB Roster Move, DFA Hometown Kid
USA TODAY Sports

Finding a true long-term home and team to play for in the big leagues is challenging. Unfortunately, Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Buddy Kennedy is used to being unable to stick around with one team.

Thursday morning, Kennedy was DFA'd by the Phillies, the second team he has been DFA'd by in his career.

President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski had already made it known that Kennedy would not be making the major league roster and would either be traded or designated for assignment.

Kennedy broke into the league in 2022 with the Arizona Diamondbacks and played 30 games as a rookie, batting .217 with just one home run.

He appeared in 10 games with Arizona in 2023 and batted just .167 before being released. The Oakland Athletics claimed him but never appeared in a game.

Kennedy spent time with both the Detroit Tigers and Phillies in 2024. He appeared in 14 games and had a low average of .190 across 26 plate appearances.

After his appearances in 2024, Kennedy has a career batting average of .203, which is not good enough for someone who wants to stick around on an MLB roster.

Philadelphia will have days to try and work out a trade to send Kennedy somewhere where playing time will be a bit easier.

Due to his lack of minor league options, Kennedy will likely bounce around from team to team unless he finds a place to get consistent at-bats and produce at a high rate.
