Phillies Make Move Before Yankees Game

The Philadelphia Phillies made a move prior to game two of a three-game series against the New York Yankees regarding the fifth spot in their pitching rotation.

The Phillies have struggled heavily this year with the fifth starter spot. The spot was given to top prospect Andrew Painter for much of the first half, but he was sent back down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley due to a 7.06 ERA.

The Phillies have not won a game with their fifth rotation spot on the mound since May 18th, they will attempt to change that on Saturday.

The Phillies announced they have called up right-handed pitcher Brian Keller to pitch on Saturday night.

Prior to tonight’s game against the New York Yankees, the Phillies announced the following roster moves:

Right-handed pitcher Brian Keller had his contract selected from triple-A Lehigh Valley and will wear No. 48

Keller has performed very well since his promotion to Triple-A in May.

In eight starts, the 32-year-old posted a 2.23 ERA with 38 strikeouts and 11 walks in 36 1/3 innings.

Keller has yet to make his major league debut despite spending parts of seven seasons in the minor leagues.

He is expected to make his major league debut following opener Tim Mayza against the Yankees.

This may be the final time the Phillies will have to worry about the fifth starter spot until the August 3rd Trade Deadline, where the team is expected to make a move for a high-caliber arm.
