The Philadelphia Phillies are less than a week away from Opening Day and have made six roster moves. Of those six moves, one player stands out for their heroism in September 2024.
Outfielder Cal Stevenson and right-handed pitcher Kyle Tyler have been optioned to Lehigh Valley (AAA), the team announced on Saturday. They also reassigned infielder Christian Arroyo, catcher Josh Breaux, right-handed pitcher Nabil Crismatt, and outfielder Óscar Mercado to Minor League Camp.
There are a lot of intriguing players that could see Major League time with the Phillies that were a part of this batch of reassignments. However, the one that stands out the most is Stevenson.
Stevenson had a small sample size in 2024 with the Phillies, but he made his mark. Against the New York Mets, Stevenson had multiple clutch moments that helped the Phillies win.
Stevenson hit a go-ahead double in the bottom of the seventh inning, and in the top of the eighth, Stevenson robbed J.D. Martinez of a home run. His heroics helped the Phillies secure the NL East.
In spring training, Stevenson has a .179 batting average in 39 at-bats with one home run and six runs batted in. Tyler had a 4.82 ERA in six games in his spring training. Both will start the 2025 season in Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Arroyo had an impressive spring training, hitting for a .325 average, two home runs, six runs batted in, two stolen bases, and a .861 OPS in 40 at-bats. Breaux had a .357 batting average, two home runs, five batted in, and a 1.295 OPS in 14 at-bats in his spring training.
Crismatt had a 2.53 ERA in seven games, one win and one loss, and eight strikeouts in 10 and two-thirds innings pitched. Mercado had a .182 average, one home run, one run batted in, and four stolen bases in 33 at-bats.
The Phillies' latest roster moves included one of the heroes from the Phillies' 2024 season in Stevenson. Opening Day is Thursday, March 27th, against the Washington Nationals in Washington, D.C.
