Phillies offering 9-9-9 challenge during playoffs

As the Philadelphia Phillies gear up for their 2025 NLDS opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers on October 4 at Citizens Bank Park, the team is serving up more than just high-stakes baseball.

The team has introduced the limited-edition 9-9-9 Challenge box — a playful twist on one of MLB’s most enduring fan traditions. Priced for playoff indulgence, the box features nine “fun-size” hot dogs, nine “petite” beers, and a built-in scoreboard to track your progress inning by inning.

The 9-9-9 Challenge, where fans consume nine hot dogs and nine beers over nine innings, traces its roots to the early 2000s, with early accounts in ESPN’s Page 2 in 2004 detailing grueling attempts amid extra-inning marathons.

It exploded in popularity around 2011, inspiring viral stories of camaraderie and conquest at ballparks nationwide.

Similar promotions have dotted recent postseasons: In August 2025, New York Mets fans tackled the full-sized version at Citi Field, blending tailgate spirit with game-day strategy.

A 2024 Minnesota challenge even went viral on TikTok, highlighting the ritual’s timeless appeal.

Back in July, retired NFL superstar J.J. Watt took on the challenge during a Milwaukee Brewers game and dominated, chronicling his completion in just 5.5 innings.

Philly’s downsized edition has sparked hilarious backlash on X, with fans decrying “cold hot dogs by the second inning” and dubbing it a “warmup” for true die-hards.

However, experts say such gimmicks boost engagement, potentially spiking attendance by 15 percent during playoffs. Whether you’re pacing for victory or just surviving the seventh-inning stretch, the Phillies’ nod to this iconic challenge promises to fuel the October fire — mini or not.
