The Philadelphia Phillies have championship DNA. The roster is loaded, Citizens Bank Park is rocking, and Bryce Harper, Trea Turner, and Kyle Schwarber are ready to make another October run. While this offense has been the driving force of this Phillies team, the pitching rotation just needs that extra push to get to that next level.
Zack Wheeler is finally settled in after opening 2026 on the injured list, Cristopher Sanchez is really dialing in as the Phillies’ No. 2 starter, and Jesus Luzardo remains a solid No. 3. While the Phillies do have a solid rotation, there is one pitcher that could put them over the top to get after the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves, and that is Tigers’ ace, Tarik Skubal.
The Skubal trade conversation has shifted from hypothetical to very real in a matter of weeks. The Detroit Tigers entered 2026 with playoff aspirations, but injuries have piled up and the team is already being discussed as a potential seller heading into August. More critically, Skubal himself revealed during spring training that the Tigers never presented him with a serious long-term extension offer, making free agency after 2026 essentially a certainty.
Rival teams are closely monitoring Detroit’s situation, and with approximately $11 million remaining on Skubal’s contract for the final two months of the season, only truly serious contenders will be able to absorb that commitment.
For Philadelphia, this is a perfect storm. The Phillies are a win-now team in the prime of their championship window, with Harper and Schwarber under long-term deals and a proven October lineup. Trading for a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner who could slot in as the clear ace above Zack Wheeler, Cristopher Sanchez, and Jesus Luzardo would turn what is currently a good rotation into an elite, playoff-hardened one. The question is not whether the Phillies should do it, it is whether they can put together a package compelling enough to get it done.
Before any deal gets made, the elephant in the room must be addressed. Just over two weeks ago, Skubal underwent surgery to remove a loose body from his elbow. The baseball world held its breath, but the recovery news has been overwhelmingly positive.
Just two weeks after going under the knife, Skubal was already playing catch in Lakeland, Florida, progressing faster than nearly anyone anticipated. Boras projects a mid-to-late June return, which would give Skubal a full two months of regular-season starts before the trade deadline and put him on a full postseason workload heading into October.
Here is the deal the Phillies should be putting on A.J. Hinch’s desk right now:
Tigers receive:
Phillies receive:
This package gives Detroit a genuine haul. Gage Wood is a legitimate top-100 prospect nationally who brings frontline starter upside, Burkholder provides premium outfield tools and athleticism at a position Detroit can always use, and McFarlane adds a ready-now bullpen weapon capable of contributing at the big league level immediately. For the Tigers, converting a pending free agent into three real, controllable assets is exactly the kind of foundational rebuild move that sets up their next competitive window.
For Philadelphia, adding Skubal to a rotation that already features Wheeler, Sanchez, and Luzardo would create arguably the most dangerous pitching staff in the National League. This trade does not just make the Phillies better, it makes them the team that no one in the NL wants to see in October. Dave Dombrowski has made bold deadline deals before. This one could be his most important.
