The Philadelphia Phillies' farm system is very good, but also top-heavy. With Aidan Miller, Andrew Painter, Justin Crawford, and some others, there's a decent fall-off after the top five to seven players in the system.
It remains uncertain what the Phillies plan to do at the trade deadline. Some have suggested the team could move on from a few of their top prospects if they get a player in return who could be a big piece for them in the future.
Regardless, the Phillies will have an opportunity to select someone in the MLB draft, as they currently hold the 26th overall pick in the first round, among many other selections.
When searching for who the Phillies could select in the MLB draft, the Sporting Tribune recently predicted they’d take Ryan Mitchell with pick No. 26. They added that the Phillies could land on a few other names. Still, Mitchell would be the player in this scenario, depending on what other teams in front of them do.
“Same names as the Tigers and Padres. Pierce would be the big ticket. Mitchell has a lot of steam towards the back half of the 20's,” they wrote.
Mitchell is a high school bat, and there are already a few prospects in the Phillies system who are relatively young and still have a few years before making their big league debut.
It likely doesn't impact the Phillies' decision in this process, but it's also something to keep in their minds. The last thing the Phillies want to do is have multiple players who are far away from playing in Major League Baseball soon.
