Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber will be one of the hottest names on the free-agency market next season.
Outside of Kyle Tucker, there's a strong argument to be made that Schwarber will be the best hitter available during the winter. All he's done throughout his lengthy career is swing the bat at a high level, proving that once again throughout the 2025 campaign with an impressive 21 home runs.
Schwarber has his issues as a player, mainly on the defensive side, and he strikes out a bunch, but he's very good, and his 152 OPS+ this season has continued to prove that.
For the Phillies veteran, even if they want to change their roster around a bit during the offseason, not keeping him around doesn't seem to make much sense.
However, the Philly Voice raised a valid point. Evan Macy spoke about how if Schwarber doesn't have a contract now, is it possible that it isn't in the Phillies' plans?
“At season's end, Schwarber, Realmuto, Kepler and Ranger Suárez will be free agents. There has not been much chatter about extensions lately, particularly with Schwarber's impressive power this season. One has to wonder if that is the Phillies' plan...
“Is it possible that extensions are not in the Phillies plans? This team as constructed does not appear to be a World Series threat — not right now anyway. Perhaps seeing how the open market and their prospects pan out is the real plan for 2025 and beyond,” he wrote.
Unless the team has a path to acquire Tucker in free agency, they should look to keep Schwarber around.
Even then, if they plan to spend more than $600 million on Tucker, why not attempt to re-sign Schwarber, too?
