Phillies Predicted To Target Star RHP To Help Leaky Bullpen

The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to be active at the MLB Trade Deadline as they search to help fix their struggling bullpen. With the 25th-ranked bullpen ERA in all of baseball at 4.64, they are among the worst in baseball.

Starting pitching and quality bats have kept the team chugging along, powering them to the fifth best record in baseball (46-31), just two games back of the league-leading Detroit Tigers.

However, the team is also being projected to look at the MLB Draft as a longer-term solution to their pitching problems.

According to MLB.com's Jim Callis and Jonathan Mayo, Phillies president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski is expected to target a right-handed pitcher for help.

With the 26th overall pick, Callis and Mayo believe the franchise will take Tyler Bremner, a 21-year-old pitcher out of The University of California, Santa Barbara.

MLB.com's scouting report of Bremner says the pitcher is known for a blazing fastball that touches 98 miles per hour with little effort, and a changeup that keeps hitters guessing.

"His best secondary offering is his easily plus changeup that some scouts hang a 70 grade on," the scouting report says. "He'll throw it to any hitter in any count, and it stays on the fastball plane for a long time with late, hard fade."

Bremner stands 6'2" and weighs 190 lbs, posting a 3.49 ERA across 77.1 innings this season, a dip from his 2.54 ERA across 88.2 innings in 2024.

Bremner is ranked as the 14th overall prospect in the draft, so the Phillies nabbing him at 26 would be a steal. 2024 was his first full year as a starting pitcher, while he has also frequently pitched from the bullpen in the past.

"Bremner dropped in our rankings because of a slow start this spring, but he finished strong and could offer some value and upside at the back of the first round," Callis and Mayo wrote.

Once the young pitcher gets work with a professional coaching staff, he could offer some significant upside as a reliever in the near future.
