Offensively speaking, the Philadelphia Phillies will have a few free agents hit the market with J.T. Realmuto and Kyle Schwarber leading the way.
However, on the mound, the Phillies also have some decisions. Left-hander Ranger Suarez will hit the free agency market and likely be wanted around Major League Baseball.
An All-Star during the 2024 campaign, an argument will be made that he'll be the second-best left-hander on the market behind Framber Valdez of the Houston Astros.
It's tough to say that the Phillies have much of a reason to bring him back.
Sure, Suarez is excellent, and that was evident by his 3.46 ERA a season ago, but the rotation is loaded, and with Andrew Painter waiting in the wings, moving on from him to have the prospect get innings at the big league level might be the right decision.
Whether that ends up being the case or not, Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes that he has an impressive resume, and if he can replicate his success during the early parts of the 2024 campaign, he'll be in a great position in free agency with many teams needing a left-handed starter.
“Suárez had a career-best season in 2024, going 12-8 with a 3.46 ERA, 145 strikeouts in 150 2/3 innings and his first All-Star nod. However, he had a 5.65 ERA in the second half and wore down as the season progressed. He started this year on the IL with a lower back injury and has made only three starts since returning.
"Suárez already has an impressive postseason resume — 3-1 with a 1.43 ERA over eight starts and two relief appearances. If he can replicate his early 2024 season, he’ll be in a strong position in free agency with so many teams in need of left-handed starters,” he wrote.
