The Philadelphia Phillies boast talent throughout their organization but recently parted ways with a former draft pick.

According to Phillies Tailgate, the team released outfielder Ethan Wilson, a second-round selection in the 2021 MLB Draft.

Wilson, 25, hit .231 with 38 home runs, 164 RBIs, 50 stolen bases, and a .662 OPS over 1,358 at-bats in his minor league career.

In 2024, he batted .208 with ten home runs, 38 RBIs, and ten stolen bases, posting a .608 OPS. He spent most of the season with Double-A Reading before earning a late-season call-up to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, where he played five games and recorded three hits, including a home run.

Wilson isn’t the only recent Philadelphia Phillies second-round draft pick with an intriguing backstory. In 2011, Roman Quinn was selected in the second round. He showed flashes of promise in MLB but struggled with injuries and inconsistency.

Two years later, the Phillies drafted Andrew Knapp in the second round. He spent time as a backup catcher before being replaced.

Another notable second-round pick was infielder Scott Kingery, who arrived with high expectations but never regained a spot in MLB despite repeated optimism each spring training.

Philadelphia continued that trend with Wilson, the 49th overall pick in the 2021 MLB Draft. Less than four years later, the Phillies released him. Outfielder Griffin Burkholder, the team’s most recent second-round pick, hopes to break the cycle.
