The 2025 MLB regular season is just over a quarter of the way complete. Around this time of year, teams begin eyeing the trade deadline for potential moves. Mid-season transactions often also include free agent signings, as unsigned players wait around for roster spots to open up whether via trade, injury or simply roster reshuffling.
For veteran infielder Jean Segura, it has been nearly two years since he last appeared in a big league game. The two-time All-Star is now 35 years old, and is seemingly not on the radar of any MLB teams after posting a 49 OPS+ in his last stint with the Miami Marlins in 2023.
On Wednesday, Segura officially announced his retirement from baseball via his agency.
"Congratulations @elmambodesegura on an amazing career: 1,413 games, 1,545 hits, 211 stolen bases, 110 home runs, 2016 National League leader in hits, 2013 All-Star and 2018 All-Star," CAA Baseball wrote on Instagram. "Good luck in retirement!"
Segura played for six MLB teams, including the Philadelphia Phillies who he went to the World Series with in 2022. Reacting to the news of his retirement, the Phillies posted a four-word comment.
"Congratulations, Jean! Enjoy retirement," the team wrote.
Segura spent four seasons in Philadelphia, posting .281 batting average in 427 games. His best season with the Phillies came in 2021 when he hit .290 while tallying 3.8 WAR. The right-handed hitting infielder finished his career with 1,545 hits and 737 runs scored. His two All-Star appearances came in 2013 with the Milwaukee Brewers and 2018 with the Seattle Mariners.
