The Philadelphia Phillies are stout with starting pitching and strong position player hitters. However, their bullpen had some issues at the end of 2024, and the departure of Jeff Hoffman was a big loss for the staff.
Philly could use some bullpen insurance to help pad one of the best rotations in the MLB.
Today, Athlon Sports has created a trade pitch that sends recent Phillies All-Star Alec Bohm to the Houston Astros for Mauricio Dubón and reliever Bryan King.
There have been rumors all offseason about the Phillies wanting to move off Bohm, and this allows them to bolster their pitching staff, plus getting another utility player in return.
The Astros need a third baseman after losing Alex Bregman to free agency, and they could slot Isaac Paredes at second base where he has experience with Jose Altuve moving to left field.
For the Phillies, they get off Bohm before having to pay him for a lefty reliever in King, who in his first real MLB season, posted a 2.39 ERA in 26.1 innings and only walked 10 batters. Control is something the Phillies could desperately use especially out of a southpaw like King.
Dubón has had trouble coming into his own as a hitter, but his defensive versatility gives the Phillies enough of a reason to take a chance on him, and Philly has other options like Edmundo Sosa or Kody Clemens that can take over at third base that provide a higher-quality bat.
Bohm is entering his sixth MLB season with the Phillies and is fresh off his best season as a pro where he recorded career-highs in OPS, batting average, and a decrease in strikeouts.
This trade idea fits both clubs and could be a potential early-season move.
