One of the biggest storylines to begin the year for the Philadelphia Phillies has been the poor start for Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm. He's been involved in trade discussions all offseason, and now the Phillies are predicted to trade for his replacement.
According to an article from Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report, the Phillies are named as the ideal landing spot for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. Arenado is a ten-time Gold Glove winner and would replace Bohm at the hot corner for the Phillies.
The 34-year-old has three years left on his contract, with $21 million in 2025, $16 million in 2026, and $15 million in 2027. Arenado is coming off a few down years in a row, but has gotten off to a solid start in 2025.
In the first 20 games of 2025, Arenado has 21 hits, 11 runs, six doubles, two home runs, and 10 RBI. He's hitting for a .288 batting average, with a very solid .847 OPS. One of his biggest strengths so far has been his strikeout-to-walk ratio. Arenado has struck out five times, compared to walking 12 times.
In comparison, Bohm has struck out 16 times in 21 games and walked just once. Bohm has an OPS of just .472, almost half that of Arenado. Through the beginning of the year, Bohm has a negative 1.1 WAR, compared to Arenado's positive 0.9 WAR.
Arenado has a full no-trade clause in his contract, but during the offseason, he made it clear he'd be willing to waive it for a few teams, including the Phillies. The Cardinals, who have started the year off poorly, could trade Arenado now that he's gotten off to a strong start. His value is as high as it's been in a few years, and the Cardinals could be incentivized to move him now.
Bleacher Report hints that with the terrible start from Bohm, the Phillies might be forced to do something a bit drastic in approaching their issues at third base. Arenado would fit in with the Phillies, as he'd provide great defense and improved hitting over Bohm.
While a package for Arenado might cost a bit, the Phillies are in win-now mode, and Bohm's lack of production has hurt the offense significantly through the beginning of the year.
