Pirates acquire C Christian Bethancourt in trade with Yankees

The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired catcher Christian Bethancourt in a trade from the New York Yankees for cash on Wednesday.

Bethancourt, 34, has played in parts of eight major league seasons but was confined to Triple-A this season in the Chicago Cubs and Yankees organizations.

After playing for Panama in the World Baseball Classic this spring, Bethancourt was batting .270 with 14 home runs and 45 RBIs in 67 combined Triple-A games. In 427 major league games, he is a career .229 hitter with 35 home runs and 135 RBIs for six teams, including his first three seasons with the Atlanta Braves (2013-15).

The move comes more than two weeks after the trade deadline, although players not on 40-man rosters still are eligible to be moved.
