Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Andrew Heaney is amid a strong 12th MLB season. It has been an up-and-down career for the veteran left-hander, but his performance in Pittsburgh thus far has been among his best.
After six innings of one one-run ball against the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, Heaney lowered his season ERA to 3.24 which ranks second-best for his career, trailing only the 3.10 mark he registered in 2022 with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Unfortunately for Heaney, his day ended at just 73 pitches against Philadelphia. Exiting after throwing a wild pitch with nobody out in the seventh, Heaney departed alongside Pittsburgh's trainer.
Pirates reliever Isaac Mattson replaced Heaney and was able to strand the inherited runner at second to keep the game tied 1-1 heading into the eighth inning. While this was a much-needed relief effort from Mattson, obvious concern remained for Heaney.
The Pirates have since announced an update, sharing that Heaney exited with left calf cramping and is receiving treatment from the team's staff (via Colin Beazley of Pittsburgh Post-Gazette).
Andrew Heaney left today's game with left calf cramping, per the Pirates. He is currently being evaluated and treated by the club's staff.

Beginning his career with the Miami Marlins in 2014, Heaney was a first round pick in the 2012 MLB Draft. He then spent seven seasons with the Los Angeles Angeles where he pitched to a 4.51 ERA in 102 starts.
Enjoying a career year with the Dodgers in 2022, Heaney was unable to consistently replicate that success across two seasons with the Texas Rangers who he appeared in 66 games for, posting a 4.22 ERA.
Now in Pittsburgh, the 34-year-old has been a rare bright spot for an otherwise poor Pirates team.
