The Pittsburgh Pirates are hopeful the franchise will take a step in the right direction this year. Pittsburgh finished with a losing record in 2025 for the seventh consecutive season.
However, there are some reasons for optimism. The Pirates added multiple quality bats in free agency and through trades this winter to bolster the lineup, signing both Ryan O’Hearn and Marcell Ozuna as well as trading for second baseman Brandon Lowe from the Tampa Bay Rays.
Pittsburgh also has the best pitcher in the National League, Paul Skenes, headlining the starting rotation. However, one player who can raise the ceiling of the Pirates not just this year but also in the future is top prospect Konnor Griffin.
Griffin has been tearing up the spring for Pittsburgh. The 19‑year‑old shortstop has crushed three home runs in his first six games, and there is a real chance he starts the year on the 40‑man roster.
That momentum now carries into another stage of his development, as the Pirates announced their Spring Breakout roster this week, and Griffin was one of the headliners.
The game is scheduled for Friday, March 20, against the Detroit Tigers, giving Griffin another national stage to showcase his rise. The event highlights each organization’s top prospects, and his inclusion reinforces how quickly he is climbing through Pittsburgh’s system and how strongly the club views his long‑term upside.

Griffin is not only Pittsburgh’s top prospect, but the consensus No. 1 prospect in all of MLB. He was drafted by the Pirates in the first round of the 2024 MLB Draft, ninth overall.
Griffin earned the top prospect spot after an incredible performance last year in the minors across three levels. In 122 games, he posted a .333 batting average, .415 on‑base percentage, .941 OPS, 21 home runs and 94 RBIs.
The impressive part is that each promotion brought out another level in his game, as he consistently improved with every jump. Griffin’s rapid rise has already reshaped expectations inside the organization, and his Spring Breakout appearance offers another chance to show why he is viewed as a potential franchise superstar.
As the Pirates look to build a sustainable contender, his development will be one of the most important factors shaping both their present and long‑term future.
