Pirates continue revamping bullpen with Luke Weaver

The Pittsburgh Pirates continued to revamp their bullpen on Monday.

ESPN's Jorge Castillo reported that the Pirates have acquired reliever Luke Weaver from the New York Mets. In exchange, Chelsea Janes of SNY reported that infielder Sammy Stafura is heading to New York.

Weaver is the second reliever the Pirates have acquired after trading for Camilo Doval on Saturday. Weaver had been excellent for the Mets, posting a 1.84 ERA and a 0.818 WHIP over his 44 innings, striking out 45 batters with 11 walks. He has some experience as a closer, recording eight saves in 2025 with the Yankees, and could be an option for the ninth inning. Weaver is also signed through 2027 and should give the Pirates some stability in the back of the bullpen.

Pirates may not be done addressing bullpen

Stafura had been ranked as the Pirates' ninth-best prospect, per MLB.com. Although there are concerns with his tendency to chase breaking pitches and his struggles to recognize spin, he has solid latent power and consistently makes hard contact while his eye at the plate has led to generally impressive walk rates. Stafura has plus speed, which supplements his excellent range and strong arm at short. He should be able to stick at short and has the floor of a major league utility infielder at worst.

Weaver and Doval may not be the only relievers the Pirates add ahead of the deadline. They have been linked to Padres reliever Adrian Morejon, who would give the Pirates another strong lefty in the bullpen.
