Pirates Make Konnor Griffin Decision Amid Rehab Assignment

Konnor Griffin is moving one step closer to a return to the Pittsburgh Pirates after the top prospect received an encouraging update on his rehab assignment.

Griffin will join Triple-A Indianapolis in Toledo on Tuesday as he continues working his way back from a left ring-finger injury. The move gives the 20-year-old another opportunity to test himself against higher-level competition before a potential return to Pittsburgh.

Griffin played seven innings for Double-A Altoona on Sunday before returning to Pittsburgh for evaluation. He remains eligible to come off the injured list Friday, Sept. 4, when the Pirates begin a home series against the Los Angeles Angels.

Aiden Stepansky of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the latest development on X, quoting the situation directly: “Konnor Griffin will head for Toledo with Triple-A Indy tomorrow. He’s eligible to come off the IL Friday.”

The Pirates have been without Griffin since July 5, when he tore the sagittal band in his left ring finger while making a diving defensive play against the Washington Nationals. He was initially placed on the 10-day injured list before eventually being transferred to the 60-day IL.

Before the injury, Griffin was making an immediate impact in his first major league season. He appeared in 59 games and hit .276 with five home runs, 25 RBIs and 20 stolen bases.
