Coming off the Pittsburgh Pirates’ loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday, 7-2, the team has made some exciting roster moves, specifically dealing with pitcher Jared Jones. With the Pirates looking to make noise in the NL Central, the team gets a boost with the return of Jones.
As announced by the team on their social media pages, Jones has been brought back up to the majors after his rehab assignment and will be taken off the 60-day injured list (IL). The other move that Pittsburgh made to allow for Jones to return to the team is designating pitcher Justin Lawrence for assignment.
“ROSTER MOVES: We have ended the rehab assignment of RHP Jared Jones and reinstated him from the 60-day injured list,” the team posted on X, formerly Twitter. “RHP Justin Lawrence has been designated for assignment to make room for Jones on the active and 40-man roster.”
The last time Jones pitched for the Pirates came in the 2024 season on Sept. 24.
After playing in the 2024 season, Jones missed the entirety of the Pirates’ 205 season after getting internal brace surgery on his right elbow on May 21 of last year. Consequently, there’s no denying that Jones is excited to return after a grueling recovery process.
“Pretty damn cool,” Jones said Thursday, via MLB.com. “It took a lot of time, 12 months, almost exactly, of not playing baseball. You kind of get a sense that you need it. That’s kind of what I’ve learned about myself over that time. I’m just extremely grateful to be back.”
“Definitely sucks going through surgery and missing an entire year,” Jones continued. “Now that I’m here again, I’m kind of grateful for it.,..I felt like in my downtime I really got to learn how I can throw my other pitches and make ‘em a lot better. I feel like that showed kinda throughout the rehab assignment. Really just getting a better feel of what I’ve got.”
Subsequently, Jones makes his return as he will get the start in the first game of the series against the Minnesota Twins on Friday.
