Pittsburgh Pirates star Konnor Griffin, who has been on the injured list due to a right elbow strain, was reinstated from the IL on Friday, the team announced. Infielder Jack Brannigan was optioned to Double-A in a corresponding move.

Griffin entered the season as the top prospect in MLB. He did not make the team out of spring training, but Griffin later received his MLB promotion. He has played well overall. The 20-year-old hit .270/.327/.402 across 51 games played to go along with four home runs, nine doubles and two triples before landing on the IL.

Griffin has been working hard to return, and now he is set to help the Pirates once again.

The Pirates are 41-40 overall this season. The ball club is in fourth place in the National League Central standings and they are 9.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the division. Pittsburgh has out-performed expectations for the most part, but it has been an up and down campaign for the team nonetheless.

Griffin’s return will help matters without question, but the Pirates may not be ready to make a serious postseason push yet. Nevertheless, they have displayed legitimate signs of improvement and the future is bright. It would not be shocking to see Pittsburgh end up becoming a contender within the next year or two.

For now, the focus is on Konnor Griffin’s return from injury on Friday. First pitch for the contest on Friday night between the Reds and Pirates in Pittsburgh is scheduled for 6:40 PM EST.
