Despite their last-place standing in the NL Central, the Pittsburgh Pirates’ fortunes in 2026 have turned around. Six games behind the division-leading Milwaukee Brewers, the Pirates look to make up that gap over the next few weeks. Starting their weekend series against the visiting Minnesota Twins with a 6-5 win on Friday, Pittsburgh will go for a series win on Saturday. The Bucs’ lineup should get a boost for that matchup, as veteran slugger Ryan O’Hearn is slated to be activated from the IL, per team beat reporter Kevin Gorman on X, formerly Twitter.
“Source: Pirates 1B/RF Ryan O’Hearn (right quad strain) is expected to be activated from the 10-day IL and will be available to play Sunday against the Minnesota Twins,” reported Gorman before Saturday’s tilt.
Signed to a two-year deal this winter, O’Hearn has provided a solid veteran bat in the heart of the Pirates’ lineup. In 44 games so far this season, the former All-Star has hit .289 with seven home runs and 29 RBI. His defense at first and in the outfield has been decent as well. While fellow slugger Marcell Ozuna hasn’t worked out to this point, O’Hearn and fellow offseason addition Brandon Lowe have been great additions as the calendar approaches June.
Despite making his first All-Star team last year, O’Hearn’s market in free agency wasn’t as robust as expected. However, the ex-San Diego Padre is looking to return to the postseason for a second straight year. At the moment, the Pirates are certainly within striking distance of a postseason spot. A Saturday win over the Twins would only help with that quest. Can O’Hearn continue his strong form after returning from the IL? If so, Pittsburgh’s chances at October baseball will certainly improve.
