Pirates Reveal Konnor Griffin's Jersey Number

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Pirates are bringing up Konnor Griffin to the major leagues and bestowing upon him a new jersey number.

Griffin will wear No. 6 on his uniform when he makes his MLB debut with the Pirates for the home opener vs. the Baltimore Orioles on April 3, according to Kevin Gorman of the Tribune-Review.

The 19-year old wore No. 6 with Single-A Bradenton, where he played his first 50 games of his professional career, after the Pirates took him ninth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Jackson Preparatory School in Jackson, Miss.

Griffin wore No. 1 in his five games with Triple-A Indianapolis, No. 12 for 21 games with Double-A Altoona, and No. 28 with High-A Greensboro.

He can't wear No. 1, as the Pirates retired that number in honor of former manager Billy Meyer (1948-52). No one has worn No. 12 for the Pirates since outfielder Corey Dickerson did for two seasons, 2018-19, and fellow Jackson Prep alum Jake Mangum wears No. 28 for the Pirates currently.

History of No. 6 with the Pirates

Griffin becomes the 35th player in Pirates history to wear No. 6 on their uniform and the first since left-handed pitcher Bailey Falter wore it last season.

The most recognizable player that wore No. 6 for the Pirates is outfielder Starling Marte, who donned the number for eight seasons from 2012-19.

Marte was an All-Star in 2016 and won back-to-back Gold Glove Awards in 2015 and 2016 with the Pirates. He also presided over the last successful tenure for the Pirates, leading them to three straight National League Wild Card berths and most recent winning season in 2018.

The player that had the most success wearing No. 6 was infielder/outfielder Rennie Stennett, who won the last two World Series for the Pirates in the number in 1971 and 1979, although he was only on the 1979 World Series team.

Stennett wore the number the longest, nine years from 1971-79, and slashed .278/.309/.366 for an OPS of .675 over 1,079 games for the Pirates.

Catcher Smoky Burgess also excelled for the Pirates wearing the No. 6 for six seasons, with four All-Star nods, 1959-61 and 1964, while playing a role in the Pirates winning the 1960 World Series.

Fellow catcher Tony Peña wore the No. 6 for his seven seasons with the team from 1980-86, earning four All-Star nods (1982, 1984-86) and winning three straight Gold Glove Awards from 1983-85.

Other notable players to wear No. 6 with the Pirates include Orlando Merced (1991-96), Mike Benjamin (1999-2002) and Lee Handley (1940-46).
