Pirates' Ryan O'Hearn to miss time due to injury

The Pittsburgh Pirates will be without one of their best hitters for some time, as first baseman/right fielder Ryan O'Hearn has landed on the injured list. According to a team announcement on X, the Pirates placed O'Hearn on the 10-day injured list with a right quad strain.

O'Hearn was removed from Saturday's 6-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies due to his injury.

In a corresponding move, the Pirates reinstated outfielder Jake Mangum from the injured list. Mangum, 30, had been on the IL since May 6 with a left hamstring strain.

Mangum and O'Hearn were both offseason acquisitions of the Pirates. Mangum was acquired via a three-team trade with the Tampa Bay Rays and the Houston Astros, and O'Hearn signed as a free agent in January.

Before landing on the injured list, Mangum played all over the outfield for the Pirates, playing 22 games (10 starts) and seeing time in right field and center field. Outfielder Billy Cook (.190 batting average, .380 OPS) has filled in for Mangum while he's been out and will continue to play a role off the bench until O'Hearn returns.

The Pirates will need to find other sources of offense while Ryan O'Hearn is absent

Signed to the first multi-year contract in a decade for the Pirates (two years, $29 million), O'Hearn has been one of, if not the best, hitters in the Pirates lineup. Through 44 games, the 2025 All-Star is batting .289 with a .827 OPS and has mashed seven home runs (third on the team).

A natural first baseman -- O'Hearn has played 21 games (six starts) at first base -- the Pirates have mainly used O'Hearn as their starting right fielder (32 games, 32 starts). While O'Hearn heals, Cook will likely see time in right field to cover for the 32-year-old as he did for Mangum.

O'Hearn is third on the team in RBI (29) behind center fielder Oneil Cruz (32) and second baseman Brandon Lowe (31), so the Pirates will need another hitter in the lineup to drive in runs. Left fielder Bryan Reynolds should be the one to step up, as he's right behind O'Hearn in RBI (26) and has been on a tear as of late. Reynolds is hitting .308 with a .900 OPS in his last 15 games.
