Pirates Send Down Top Outfield Prospect, Griffin Update
USA Today Sports

The Pittsburgh Pirates have recently made another round of cuts from their Spring Training roster. They sent down two players: recent acquisition and utility prospect Tyler Callihan and their best hitter in Spring Training (and most controversial demotion so far), top outfield prospect Jhostnyxon Garcia. While fans may not be thrilled to see Garcia, who ripped apart pre-season pitching, it is an understandable roster move, so he gets regular playing time. These roster moves also mean that the number one prospect in all of baseball (and the Pirates’ best and only shortstop option), Konnor Griffin, makes another round of cuts.

Pirates Send Down Top Outfield Prospect, Griffin Update

A Controversial, Yet Understandable Decision

Garcia was acquired from the Boston Red Sox during this offseason. The Bucs sent three players, most notably Johan Oviedo, to the Sox for Garcia. They also received under-the-radar pitching prospect Jesus Travieso in the trade. Garcia did everything he could to try to make the Opening Day roster in Spring Training. In 41 plate appearances, he racked up 15 hits, including two home runs and a double. Garcia may have struck out ten times, but he also drew four walks.

Garcia had a very promising 2025 campaign in the Red Sox’s minor league system. He stepped to the plate 489 times between Double-A and Triple-A, slashing .267/.340/.470. Garcia went yard 21 times with a .203 isolated slugging percentage. His 26.8% strikeout rate may not inspire much confidence, but he did have a 71.2% contact rate. Garcia also had a 9.2% free pass percentage. Overall, he owned a .360 wOBA and 116 wRC+. This earned him a call-up in August, but he appeared in only 5 MLB games.

While sending Garcia down may get tons of criticism, it is ultimately the right move by the Pirates. There is no path for playing time for Garcia right now. The Pirates’ outfield is set between Oneil Cruz, Bryan Reynolds, and Ryan O’Hearn. 2025 standout rookie and fellow offseason acquisition Jake Mangum has also had a solid Spring Training. Garcia needs regular reps, and he won’t get that as the Pirates’ 4th/5th outfielder. However, he will get that now that he is starting the year at Triple-A. He is currently ranked as one of the Pirates’ best prospects. MLB Pipeline ranks him as the Pirates’ fifth-best prospect, while Baseball America ranks him as the sixth-best.

Konnor Griffin Lives to Play Another Day

But the other positive is that Konnor Griffin survives another round of optionings. The Pirates do not have very many shortstop-capable middle infielders left in Spring Training. Currently, Griffin and Alika Williams are the only two non-roster invitee position players left in camp. Williams has struggled badly at the plate when given an opportunity in the Major Leagues. Meanwhile, Griffin is one of, if not the most talented, prospects the Pirates have ever had.

Sending Jhostynxon Garcia down may not be the most popular decision, but it wasn’t feasible for the Pirates to carry five outfielders on their 26-man roster. Starting the year at Indianapolis gives him the much-needed regular playing time he needs. Meanwhile, Griffin gets yet another day closer to Opening Day, still on the Pirates’ roster.
