Pittsburgh edged Cincinnati 1-0 in a crisp pitcher’s duel that saw both starters trade scoreless innings until the eighth. Braxton Ashcraft delivered the best start of his career, tossing 7.2 shutout innings (7.2 IP, 0 ER, 4 H, 2 BB, 6 K, 82 pitches) before Gregory Soto (3-0) earned the win in relief. Stellar defense preserved the game. Nick Gonzales threw out a runner at the plate in the top of the eighth. This play set the stage for Oneil Cruz’s go-ahead RBI single in the bottom half.
Oneil Cruz: 2-for-4, 1 RBI, 1 SB, .264 AVG, .322 OBP, .500 SLG. Cruz delivered the decisive blow in the bottom of the eighth inning. He laced a two-out single to center field. This hit drove in Konnor Griffin for the game’s only run. He hit clutch plays that made the difference. His 11th stolen base of the year contributed significantly in a game where hits were at a premium.
After a scheduled off-day on Monday, the Pirates will begin a six-game road trip on Tuesday in Arizona. They are set to face the Diamondbacks in a three-game series as they look to maintain their winning streak.
