Pittsburgh Pirates Recall Several Key Players From Minors
Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Tuesday was a busy one for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Several moves were made with their roster, as multiple players will be away from the team. Utility man Ji Hwan Bae was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a sprained right wrist.

That move was retroactive to June 3rd. Joining him on the sidelines for a few days will be outfielder Michael A. Taylor. Taylor was placed on the paternity list. Along with those two players, the Pittsburgh Pirates are also making some clerical moves.

Pitcher Marco Gonzalez, who has not pitched since April 13th, was moved from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day. The team also optioned left-hand pitcher Jose Hernandez to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Potentially joining Hernandez in Triple-A is catcher Grant Koch. Koch went 0-for-7 in his short stint in the Steel City. Fellow catcher Jason Delay, who was activated from the injured list, was optioned to Triple-A as well.

Part of the reason Delay was sent to Indianapolis was because the Pittsburgh Pirates are re-calling catcher Henry Davis. Davis had a brutal start to the 2024 season hit .162 with zero home runs and four RBIs in 23 games.

Since going down to the minors, his bat has got going. In 23 games at Triple-A, Davis hit .296 with seven home runs, seven doubles and 17 RBI. The Pirates need the No. 1 overall pick from the 2021 MLB Draft to continue hitting at that level to make up for his still-developing defense behind the plate.

Joining Davis on the call-up to Pittsburgh is outfielder Jack Suwinski. Suwinski got sent down on May 23rd after a tough start to the season, hitting .174 with four home runs in 49 games. He made seven appearances in Triple-A, hitting .250 with one homer.

Manager Derek Shelton is wasting no time in getting them back in the lineup. Suwinski will be starting in centerfield on Tuesday when the Pittsburgh Pirates start their series against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
