If you needed additional evidence of where Pope Leo XIV‘s allegiance lies when it comes to Chicago baseball teams, the Pope himself gave confirmation on Wednesday. The Chicago native arrived at the Vatican wearing a ’47 Brand White Sox hat.

The Pope (Robert Prevost) was specifically born in Dolton, a neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The South Side, of course, is where the White Sox call home. Pope Leo’s brother even told WGN News after his May 9 election that his brother “was always a Sox fan.”
On top of that, the Pope was spotted on the broadcast of Game 1 of the 2005 World Series between the White Sox and Houston Astros. It has since been confirmed he was there. The White Sox said he has an open invitation to return to Rate Field whenever he wants.
“He has an open invite to throw out a first pitch,” said Brooks Boyer, the White Sox executive vice president, chief revenue and marketing officer, via MLB.com. “Heck, maybe we’ll let him get an at-bat.”
So, there you go. The Pope is a White Sox fan. The organization appreciates his fandom, installing a graphic that was unveiled on the concourse wall near Section 140 in the exact spot where he sat during Game 1 of the 2005 World Series.
“We asked one question: Where did he sit? The answer was very clear. It was seat 2,” Boyer said. “That was his seat as he sat next to the patriarch of the family.
“For us to acknowledge the section by having the Pope be part of our history, for us to be able to put something as quickly as we have been able to do, to put this on the ballpark is something very special for us. It only adds to our 125 years of history at the park.”
