Potential Braves shortstop of the future earns massive promotion

The Braves recently acquired Ha-Seong Kim off waivers from the Rays, and the hope is that he will opt-in to his $16 million player option for next season, giving the Braves a competent shortstop for the first time since Dansby Swanson.

However, Kim is not likely to be in Atlanta for very long. He’s a Scott Boras client, so if he performs well, he’s going to be looking for top dollar on the open market. The Braves really need somebody in their farm system to come through. Perhaps it’s one of the three shortstops they took at the top of this year’s MLB draft, but the one name that’s really stood out this year is John Gil.

Gil was apart of the Braves 2023 international signing class and signed with the organization for $110,000, much less than the $2.5 million outfielder Luis Guanipa received. However, after a couple of years in the system, Gil is the member of that class that is making the most noise. He recently completed a very impressive campaign for the Augusta Green Jackets, hitting .258 with seven homers — good for an OPS of .730.

Augusta’s season just concluded this weekend, but Gil’s not finished, as the Braves decided to promote him to AA Columbus to finish the year.

Over his final couple months in August, Gil became a superstar offensively, hitting nearly .340 with six of his seven home runs.

Gil is an incredible athlete with 70-grade speed. He stole 50 bases this year and looks to have a real chance at sticking at shortstop long-term. With the strides he took offensively this year, particularly his power surge to end the season, there’s reason to believe the 19-year-old could end up being the Braves shortstop of the future.
