Potential Braves target elects free agency

Near the top of the Braves’ offseason to-do list must be finding another proven arm to add to their rotation, and one name to keep an eye on is Michael King of the Padres, who officially declined his player option for the 2026 season, making him a free agent.

King dealt with some health issues this season, but if his medicals check out, he should be among the more sought-after starting pitchers in this year’s free-agent class. In two seasons with the Padres after coming over from the Yankees in the Juan Soto deal, he posted a 3.10 ERA across 247 innings.

King excels in two key areas: limiting hard contact and striking batters out. That’s the formula for sustained success at the major-league level, and he will still be 31 years old heading into next season. His market will be fascinating to follow coming off an injury-riddled campaign, but he likely sits right around the upper spending threshold the Braves might be willing to reach for a starting pitcher this offseason — certainly a name to keep an eye on as free agency unfolds.
