Power-needy Guardians take flier on Rhys Hoskins

The Cleveland Guardians lineup has been an ongoing weakness. A low-cost signing could make a significant difference.

Zack Meisel of The Athletic reported that the Guardians have agreed to a minor league deal with first baseman Rhys Hoskins. Meisel further reported that Hoskins would earn $1.5M if he makes the major league roster.

Hoskins had been a solid power threat for the Philadelphia Phillies between 2018 and 2022. He posted a .241/.350/.483 batting line over his 2,665 plate appearances in that span, hitting 130 homers and 142 doubles. Hoskins hit at least 27 homers in each non-pandemic shortened season, eclipsing the 30 home run plateau twice.

Hoskins had been set to continue as a key piece in the middle of the Phillies batting order in 2023 until a torn ACL cost him the season. He was able to receive a two-year, $34M contract with an opt-out after 2024 and a mutual option for 2026 from the Milwaukee Brewers, but struggled to recapture his previous form. Hoskins posted a .223/.314/.418 batting line in his 845 plate appearances, hitting 38 homers and 26 doubles.

The Guardians could have a role for Hoskins in 2026. First basemen Kyle Manzardo and C.J. Kayfus are both left-handed hitters, potentially giving Hoskins a place as part of a platoon. Likewise, if Hoskins proves to be healthy and can recapture the form he showed with the Phillies, he could earn a regular place in the Guardians lineup.

The Guardians need players outside of third baseman Jose Ramirez and outfielder Steven Kwan to step up to contend in 2026. If Hoskins can remain healthy and return to form, he could be a tremendous bargain.
