The Atlanta Braves aren’t in a position to stand pat at this year’s MLB trade deadline. With a 55-40 record, ATL has the third-best record in the National League.
If they’re serious about making another postseason push, upgrading the starting rotation has to be the front office’s top priority. While there are several intriguing pitchers expected to be available, one name stands above the rest outside of Detroit Tigers’ Tarik Skubal: Minnesota Twins ace Joe Ryan.
Ryan has been at the center of trade speculation for months, and for good reason. If the Twins ultimately decide to sell, few pitchers on the market would command a bigger return. That’s exactly why the Braves should do everything they can to bring him to Atlanta.
With a deep lineup, starting pitching has quietly become one of the Braves’ biggest weaknesses.
Atlanta entered the season expecting Spencer Strider to be an anchor of the rotation, but injuries have once again altered those plans. Joey Wentz and Martin Perez are also on the injured list, leaving the Braves scrambling to piece together quality innings every fifth day. Not to mention, they have been without Spencer Schwellenbach all season. While the offense has enough firepower to compete with anyone, postseason success almost always comes down to pitching depth.
That’s where Ryan changes everything.
The right-hander has developed into one of the American League’s most dependable starters, combining swing-and-miss stuff with exceptional command. He’s capable of pitching deep into games, limiting walks, and giving his team a chance to win nearly every time he takes the mound. Those are exactly the qualities Atlanta needs as it prepares for what it hopes will be another October run.
Ryan would also provide stability beyond this season. Unlike a rental acquisition, he’s the type of pitcher who could remain a key piece of the Braves’ rotation for years to come. That makes surrendering premium prospects far easier to justify, especially for a franchise built around a core that’s expected to contend annually. Of course, acquiring Ryan won’t be easy.
The Twins know exactly how valuable he is, and with multiple contenders expected to pursue him, the bidding could become intense. Atlanta would almost certainly have to part with several of its top prospects to get a deal done. That’s never an easy decision, but championship windows don’t stay open forever. If the Braves truly believe they can compete for another World Series, this is the type of aggressive move they should be willing to make.
Ryan instantly transforms Atlanta’s rotation from one filled with uncertainty into one capable of matching up with the National League’s best. He would alleviate pressure on the bullpen, reduce the burden on the offense to win high-scoring games, and give the Braves another legitimate frontline starter when the games matter most. A 1-2 punch of him and Chris Sale could be lethal.
There may be flashier rumors between now and the trade deadline, which is July 31, but none would have a bigger impact on Atlanta’s championship hopes than landing Joe Ryan.
If the Twins officially make him available, the Braves will be first in line.
Atlanta will find a way to get this done. The only prospect the Braves should not consider for Ryan is future star pitcher Cam Caminiti (Braves No. 1, MLB No. 43). Outside of that, any prospect should be on the table.
