Predicting Mariners’ biggest move before MLB trade deadline

The Seattle Mariners have built one of the deepest starting rotations in baseball, and that strength could ultimately lead them to make one of the most surprising moves before the MLB trade deadline. Rather than adding another arm, Seattle’s biggest move may be trading one away.

Veteran right-hander Luis Castillo has long been one of the faces of the Mariners’ pitching staff, but as the organization looks toward both the present and the future, he has become the most logical trade candidate. While dealing a pitcher of Castillo’s caliber would certainly grab headlines, it could also be the type of calculated move that positions Seattle for sustained success.

At first, the idea seems counterintuitive.

Teams with championship aspirations typically don’t trade established starting pitchers in the middle of a playoff race. However, the Mariners are in a unique position. Their rotation remains one of the strongest in the majors, with younger starters continuing to emerge and outperform expectations (Bryan Woo, Bryce Miller, Emerson Hancock). That depth gives Seattle the flexibility to consider a move that many other contenders couldn’t make.

Castillo’s 2025 campaign has reflected where he is at this stage of his career. There have been stretches where he’s looked like the frontline starter the Mariners acquired to anchor their rotation. At other times, inconsistency has crept into his performances, making him less reliable than some of Seattle’s younger options. He’s still capable of delivering quality starts and helping a contender, but he no longer appears to be the unquestioned ace of the staff.

Castillo’s first start of 2026 was his best, when he pitched 6.0 innings against the New York Yankees and did not allow a run in late March. However, he proceeded to allow 20 earned runs in April, seeing his ERA rise to 8.06. Slowly, Castillo has improved and lowered his ERA to 4.93. Overall, his numbers are the worst of his career by a large margin. Waiting another year to trade him could diminish the value he has.

There should be no shortage of interested teams. Every trade deadline features contenders searching for reliable starting pitching, and Castillo checks plenty of boxes. He has postseason experience, can pitch deep into games, and possesses the kind of veteran presence that playoff-bound clubs covet. Teams with championship aspirations are often willing to pay a premium for proven starters, especially when the market lacks many top-tier options. If Tarik Skubal and Joe Ryan stay put, then Castillo’s value increases a little bit more.

For Seattle, the return could be just as valuable as the financial flexibility.

Trading Luis Castillo could allow the Mariners to address other areas of the roster, whether that’s adding another impact right-handed bat, strengthening the bullpen, or replenishing a farm system after previous moves. It’s the kind of deal that doesn’t necessarily make the rotation better on paper, but it could make the overall roster more complete.

Castillo wouldn’t likely pitch in a Wild Card or a best-of-five Divisional Series anyway, with Logan Gilbert, George Kirby, Bryce Miller, Woo, and Hancock all available. Of course, making this move would require confidence in the pitchers already on the staff.

Seattle would be betting that its younger starters can continue performing at a high level throughout the remainder of the season and into October. That’s not without risk, but championship teams often have to make difficult decisions based on where they believe their roster is headed rather than where it has been.

Castillo has meant a great deal to the Mariners since arriving in Seattle, and there’s little doubt he can still help a winning team. But baseball is ultimately about maximizing value and recognizing when circumstances change. With the rotation continuing to thrive around him and several contenders likely searching for experienced starting pitching, Castillo has become the obvious trade candidate.

It wouldn’t be the most popular move the Mariners could make before the deadline, but it may end up being the smartest. If Seattle believes its future rotation is already in place, trading Luis Castillo could be the bold decision that strengthens the organization both for the rest of 2025 and for seasons to come.
