The Boston Red Sox desperately need a first baseman in the wake of Triston Casas' season-ending knee injury, but their superstar doesn't seem open to the role based on his recent comments.
Following Thursday's 5-0 win over the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park, Devers told reporters after the game that he isn't willing to play first base for the Red Sox. The star slugger added that the team told him to put his glove away during spring training and he isn't interested in changing positions again.

Devers is apparently still frustrated with Boston's front office for moving him from third base to designated hitter this offseason to make room for Alex Bregman. The three-time All-Star has not played the field at all this season, spending all 39 games at DH.
Devers has never played first base in the Major Leagues before, so asking him to suddenly learn a new position in the middle of the season would be difficult. However, it's disappointing that a franchise player on a $330 million contract isn't willing to do something that might be in the best interest of the team.
With Devers refusing to budge from DH, the Red Sox will need to look elsewhere for a Casas replacement. They've been linked to veteran free-agent Anthony Rizzo , who's 35 and still unsigned after playing for the New York Yankees last year.
In the meantime, Abraham Toro and Romy Gonzalez will continue to man first base in Casas' absence, although neither is as talented a hitter as Devers.
