Rafael Devers Reflects on Controversial Trade from Red Sox

Rafael Devers’ relationship with the Boston Red Sox disintegrated quickly. Multiple off-the-field issues, including two disagreements over his role as a positional player and a poorly received meeting with owner John Henry, culminated in the three-time All-Star being traded to the San Francisco Giants.

On Monday, Red Sox chief officer Craig Breslow, ace Garrett Crochet, and other key players offered their opinions on the controversial move. It was the first time anyone directly related to the situation spoke.

During Tuesday’s introductory press conference with the Giants, Devers had the opportunity to share his side of the story and retaliate against his former team. Instead, he began by thanking the Red Sox and expressing his enthusiasm to be joining San Francisco.

“First of all, I want to thank the Boston Red Sox organization for signing me at 16 and giving me the opportunity to become a big leaguer. I’m happy to be here with the San Francisco Giants, represent Latin America, and meet Barry Bonds.”

When asked what went wrong in Boston, Devers downplayed the drama, stating, “I’m moving forward from the situation in Boston.” Devers was later pressed for an answer but offered a similar response, “That is in the past. I’m looking forward. I really don’t want to talk about it.”

A key factor in the downfall of Devers’ relationship with Boston was his refusal to change positions for the betterment of the team. Whether it was moving to designated hitter after the signing of Alex Bregman or to first base once Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury, Devers had no intention of doing either.

Now, with the Giants, Devers offered a different answer.

“I’m here to give my 100%. I don’t put in any ‘buts,’” Devers said. They [president of baseball operations Buster Posey and manager Bob Melvin] are the men in charge. "I am here to play wherever they want me to play."

With gold glove winner Matt Chapman occupying third base, Melvin confirmed Devers will take reps at first base for the Giants while also spending time at DH – a decision Devers seemed happy about.

Devers and the Red Sox will come face-to-face for the first time since the trade this Friday at Oracle Park. It is unsure what position he will be playing when Boston comes to town, but Devers, with a big smile on his face, told the media, “I will give my 100% and try to win the series.”
