A former Toronto Blue Jay signed on Tuesday evening.

According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Arizona Diamondbacks have re-signed Randal Grichuk to a one-year deal with a mutual option for the 2026 season. The deal is worth $2 million (plus incentives) with a contract worth $5 million if the mutual option is taken. If not, there’s a $3 million buyout.

Grichuk was selected by the Los Angeles back in 2009, one pick before Mike Trout, and made his big league debut in 2014 with the St. Louis Cardinals. Before the 2018 season, the Blue Jays acquired him, with Grichuk hitting a career-high 31 home runs in 628 plate appearances in 2019 where he slashed .232/.280/.457.

In 2020, Grichuk slashed .273/.281/.423 with 12 home runs in 231 plate appearances for a 108 wRC+, followed by a season where he slashed .241/.281/.423 with 22 home runs in 545 plate appearances in 2021. Before the beginning of the 2022 season, the Blue Jays traded him to the Colorado Rockies for Ramiel Tapia and prospect Adrian Pinto.

It was an unremarkable 2022 season for Grichuk, but he followed that up with a solid 2023 where he slashed .267/.321/.459 with 16 home runs in 471 plate appearances for a 101 wRC+ At the trade deadline, the Rockies traded him to the Angels, where he was eventually designated for assignment.

In the 2023-24 off-season, Grichuk signed with the Diamondbacks for the 2024 season. Last season, he slashed .291/.348/.528 with 12 home runs in 279 plate appearances for a 139 wRC+, the highest of his career.

Grichuk mashed left-handed pitching last season, slashing .319/.386/.528 with six home runs in 184 plate appearances for a 151 wRC+. He wasn’t too bad against right-handed pitchers either, slashing .242/.274/.527 with six home runs for a 116 wRC+.

All of this is to say that Grichuk would’ve been a solid option if the Blue Jays wanted to add a fourth outfielder who can mash left-handed pitching. Perhaps the Blue Jays can find that outfield through a trade now.
