Texas Rangers starting pitcher Jacob deGrom made his highly-anticipated season debut on Sunday. Spending the first nine years of his MLB career with the New York Mets, deGrom won two Cy Young Awards and made four All-Star teams.
Signing a five-year, $185 million contract with Texas following the 2022 season, deGrom made just six starts in 2023 and just three last season before undergoing Tommy John surgery.
One of baseball's best pitchers when healthy, deGrom owns a career 2.51 ERA that was lowered with his five scoreless innings against the Boston Red Sox on Sunday at Globe Life Field in Texas.
Following deGrom's impressive season debut, the Rangers announced via manager Bruce Bochy that he will be extended to six or seven innings in his next start, should his pitch count permit that.
"Bruce Bochy said Jacob deGrom can go six, maybe seven innings depending on his pitch count next start," Michael Bier of Foul Territory shared on X.

Described him as throwing “free and easy.”
Throwing just 73 pitches on Sunday, deGrom was understandably limited in his return from injury, but Bochy revealed the exciting news that he can go deeper into his next start. Leaving the game with a 1-0 lead, deGrom finished with a no-decision, as the Rangers bullpen surrendered the lead before their offense rallied to secure a 3-2 victory.
deGrom's run in New York was special, and he still has Mets fans who root for him in Texas.

Now 3-1 through four games, the Rangers will hit the road for a three-game set with the Cincinnati Reds before returning home for a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays.
