It didn’t take long for the Rangers to make a hire for their vacant managerial position. Texas announced on October 3 that Skip Schumaker would become the team’s next manager, less than one year after he left Miami in 2024.
The 45-year-old Schumaker signed a four-year deal to take over as Rangers manager. The team confirmed the news in a press release on October 3.
It comes less than a week after the Rangers and Bruce Bochy, their 2025 manager, mutually agreed to part ways after two seasons. Bochy was offered an advisory role by the Rangers.
Schumaker had a relatively successful run with the Marlins as their manager, despite a 100-loss season in 2024. The former Cardinal helped lead Miami to a playoff berth in 2023, their second in four seasons and first in a 162-game season since 2003. Jake Burger, who helped power the Marlins over the final two months of that year, played under Schumaker with the Marlins.
His work during the 2023 season helped Schumaker win the NL Manager of the Year award.
The 2024 campaign didn’t go as well, as noted earlier. But even before that season, it became increasing obvious that he wouldn’t stick with Miami beyond 2024. Schumaker had his option for 2025 voided, a move made after the team’s front office turned over after the 2023 campaign.
Schumaker joined the Rangers as a senior advisor after the 2024 season.
As a player, Schumaker spent 11 Major League seasons as a utilityman. Schumaker played for the Cardinals, Dodgers, and Reds, with his final MLB season coming in 2015. He was on the Cardinals team that beat the Rangers in seven games back in the 2011 World Series.
The Rangers become the first team to fill a managerial vacancy in 2025-26. The Braves, Twins, Giants, and Angels all have vacancies to contend with over the coming weeks.
