The Texas Rangers have fallen out of playoff contention with a disappointing month of August (6–12), entering Thursday five games out of the final AL wild card spot.

Although the pitching staff has lived up to expectations, the Rangers’ offense that led them to the World Series in 2023 has been underwhelming—most notably Marcus Semien.

The 34-year-old veteran has experienced a down season after back-to-back All-Star appearances for Texas in 2023–24. Semien has posted a .230 batting average, .306 on-base percentage, .670 OPS, and just 15 home runs across 126 games.

He’s averaged a 26-home run pace over his three seasons with the Rangers, indicating his power numbers have trended down as he enters the later stages of his career.

Marcus Semien Injury Update

During Thursday’s matchup with the Kansas City Royals, Semien was pinch-hit for by teammate Ezequiel Duran in the third inning, removed with an apparent injury. He appeared to foul a ball off his foot in the first inning and attempted to play through it before exiting the game.

Moments later, it was confirmed that this was the reason behind Semien's exit—he had been diagnosed with a left foot contusion.

“Marcus Semien left today's game with a left foot contusion. He fouled a ball off his foot in the first inning. He originally remained in the game before being pinch hit for in his second plate appearance of the day in the third inning,” wrote MLB.com's Kennedi Landry.

Semien Heating Up at the Plate as Rangers Fight to Stay Alive

Although Semien has struggled in 2025, he’s shown signs of life recently—going 8-for-19 (.421 average) with two home runs and five RBIs. His veteran presence as the captain of the team also underscores his importance to the group, and if he were to miss an extended period of time, it would be an unfortunate blow.

With time winding down on the season, the Rangers will need to go on a winning streak if they intend to return to the postseason for the first time since they won it all in 2023.
