Rays Acquire Versatile MLB Veteran Amid Battle With Yankees

The Tampa Bay Rays continue to operate with the kind of quiet efficiency that has defined their best seasons, and the latest addition fits the pattern perfectly.

Just days after Atlanta released him, veteran infielder Jorge Mateo agreed to a major-league contract with the Rays (via MLB insider Francys Romero), joining a club that sits atop the American League East and is determined to stay there.

Mateo, who turns 31 later this month, arrives with a well-traveled résumé and tools that still play. The Dominican-born right-handed hitter can handle shortstop, second base, and even the outfield, offering manager Kevin Cash another versatile piece as the stretch run intensifies.

His career has already included stops with the Yankees organization as a prospect, the Padres, the Orioles, and most recently the Braves.

In 2022, he led the American League in stolen bases and earned a Fielding Bible Award for his defense at short, proof that the speed and range remain part of his identity even after an elbow reconstruction two years ago.

Atlanta had signed him in January to a one-year, $1 million deal as insurance after Ha-Seong Kim’s early injury. When Kim returned and young options pushed ahead, Mateo’s playing time dwindled.

He finished his Braves tenure hitting .240 with four home runs across 65 games before the club designated him for assignment and released him.

The Rays get him at a bargain, owing only the prorated portion of the major league minimum while Atlanta remains on the hook for most of the original salary.

Because the deal came well before the August 31 deadline, Mateo will be eligible for the postseason roster if Tampa Bay advances.

That eligibility matters. The Rays entered this week with the best record in the American League and a six-game lead over the Yankees in the AL East. Holding off New York has required the same kind of roster depth and opportunistic moves that have become the franchise’s trademark.

Mateo is not expected to seize an everyday job from Junior Caminero or the other established pieces, but he provides a right-handed bat and experienced glove that can spell Taylor Walls at short or fill in against left-handed pitching. In a division race that still has more than six weeks to go, every reliable option counts.

For a club chasing October baseball, low-cost depth with proven tools is never a small thing. Mateo’s wheels, defensive range, and familiarity with high-stakes environments give the Rays one more layer as they work to keep the Yankees at arm’s length and secure the AL East for the first time in years.
