This season has been a topsy-turvy one already for the Tampa Bay Rays . They have been respectable in road games, but their home record has been woeful. It's enough to give Rays manager Kevin Cash heartaches and heartbreaks at the same time.
For Cash, the latest loss at George M. Steinbrenner Field happened on Monday night, May 19. Tampa Bay put itself in position to tie up their game with the Houston Astros.
Speedy Chandler Simpson reached third base with one out in the ninth inning and Tampa Bay down 4-3.

But a failed bunt attempt and a pop-up resulted in outs against Astros ace reliever Josh Hader and secured yet another loss at home for the Rays.
The Rays started out hot at home, winning eight of its first 13 home contests. Since then? Not so good. They have lost 13 of 16.
“With Chandler at third base, feels like there's a lot of opportunity if you get it down. It's a really tough play for any fielder,” Cash said after the game, MLB.com reported. “I like the direction he was thinking to get it to, with Hader coming off the mound the other way. It was a top of the zone fastball, I think, that just stayed up in the air a little too long.”
Not winning at home might come back to haunt the Rays. They have played 29 home games this season, the most of all MLB teams. Tampa Bay will play 14 of its next 18 games at home (with a four-game road series in Houston in the mix here, too).
But Tampa Bay has 59 of its final 97 games this season on the road. It's time to put up or shut up about winning at their substitute home field.
“They're all important," Cash said. "The ones coming up are obviously going to be the most important. Would like to see us play better baseball here. Whether we're here or somewhere else, just play better baseball.”
Tampa Bay continued its three-game home series with the Astros on Tuesday night.
