The Tampa Bay Rays placed struggling left-hander Steven Matz on the 15-day injured list Thursday due to a sprained left ankle.

Matz, 35, gave up five runs in two innings of relief in Tuesday's 12-5 loss to the visiting Kansas City Royals.

He is 4-4 with a 6.28 ERA in 15 games (10 starts) in his first season with the Rays, including an 11.57 ERA in the bullpen.

Matz is 64-66 with a 4.30 ERA in 261 career games (182 starts) with the New York Mets (2015-20), Toronto Blue Jays (2021), St. Louis Cardinals (2022-25), Boston Red Sox (2025) and Rays.

Tampa Bay recalled right-hander Michael Grove from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move. Grove, 29, last pitched in the majors with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2024.
