Rays' Reliever Suffers 2nd Injury Setback

This isn't good news for the Tampa Bay Rays and their bullpen.

Rays manager Kevin Cash told reporters on Friday that relief pitcher Edwin Uceta (right shoulder impingement) suffered a setback after he extended his throwing to 75 feet.

According to Cash, Uceta received a PRP injection in his shoulder and is now in waiting mode to see how it responds.

This is the second setback that Uceta has suffered. The righty was shut down in April on his rehab assignment after experiencing soreness in his shoulder.

Uceta has missed the entire season to this date after going on the injured list in March with a right shoulder impingement.

Last season, the right-hander went 10-3 with a 3.79 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 103 strikeouts in 70 appearances and 76 innings.

Uceta had a breakout campaign in 2024 with the Rays, where he posted a 1.51 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 57 strikeouts in 41.2 innings and 30 appearances.

The 28-year-old has also pitched for the New York Mets, Arizona Diamondbacks and Los Angeles Dodgers in his big-league career.

However, the Rays are the team that has been able to unlock his potential as a major league reliever.

Despite the emergence of closer Bryan Baker, the Rays' bullpen currently ranks 21st in baseball with a 4.39 ERA as a unit. They could use Uceta's production right now, but it sounds like he will be out for a while longer after his latest setback.

Tampa Bay holds the best record in the American League at 34-19. That being said, the New York Yankees are right on their heels in the AL East at 1.5 games back.

The Rays have been a nice surprise in 2026 and they will be hoping to continue their success as the season progresses. Their hot start can be attributed to a 19-5 record at home, a top offense and elite starting rotation.
