Rays’ stadium future gets massive update

With the Tampa Bay Rays looking to make a postseason push, the future of the team is bright after the approval on Friday for a new stadium in the city for the team. As the Rays try to hold their lead in the AL East, the team will be getting a new stadium in Tampa Bay with the latest deal as details have been revealed.

According to Ryan Bass, the Hillsborough County Commission has passed through a $2.3 billion stadium deal, as the saga surrounding a new stadium is complete “after nearly two decades.”

“The Hillsborough County Commission has voted in favor of the $2.3 billion stadium deal, which follows Tampa City Council’s approval yesterday. After nearly two decades, the Tampa Bay Rays stadium saga is all but over. The #Rays have secured their forever home in Tampa,” Bass wrote on X, formerly Twitter,

The baseball team has been playing inside Tropicana Field since the inaugural season of the Rays in 1998.

Rays chief executive officer Ken Babby released a statement on Thursday saying how “grateful” he is for the City Council members to approve the $2.3 billion deal, via ESPN. Funded by public and private money, whether through the Rays themselves or other avenues, Babby would continue to show his “deepest gratitude” for the movement in the stadium deal, according to Tampa Bay’s Spectrum News,

“I want to express our deepest gratitude to Hillsborough County and the City of Tampa for their leadership, partnership, and willingness to say yes to what for so long had been considered impossible: a new ballpark for the Tampa Bay Rays,” Rays Manager Partner and Co-Chair Patrick Zalupski said in a released statement. “This has been a long and challenging process, and we know that transformational projects rarely come easily.”

Team officials have said, “They want to be in the new facility in time for the 2029 season.” At any rate, it remains to be seen what the next steps are for the team’s new stadium, as the team is in the midst of the 2026 season.
