This trade-filled Friday has continued.

Just minutes after trading Brandon Lowe out of the American League East , the Tampa Bay Rays made a second move, trading starting pitcher Shane Baz to the Baltimore Orioles. In return, the Rays received Caden Bodine , Slater de Brun, Austin Overn, Micheal Forret, and the Orioles’ Competitive Balance Round A pick.

Baz, 26, was drafted 12th overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2017, but was traded in the infamous Chris Archer trade in 2018 that also saw the Rays receive Tyler Glasnow and Austin Meadows. The right-handed pitcher has struggled with injuries throughout his career, but finally remained healthy throughout 2025, authoring a 4.87 ERA and 4.37 FIP in 166.1 innings pitched.

It’s a lot to give up for an oft-injured pitcher who didn’t have the best 2025 season. Bodine was selected 30th overall in the 2025 draft and slashed .326/.408/.349 with no home runs in 49 plate appearances in Single-A after the draft. Seven picks later, the Orioles drafted de Brun out of Summit High School, but he’s yet to make his professional debut. Bodine ranked as MLB Pipeline’s 10th-best Oriole prospect, while de Brun ranked as their sixth-best prospect.

Forret had a strong 2025 season between High-A and Double-A, finishing the year with a 1.58 ERA and 2.37 FIP in 74 innings pitched, with a 32.3 K% and 7.4 BB%. The right-handed pitcher ranks one spot behind Bodine on the Orioles top prospect list according to MLB Pipeline.

Overn doesn’t rank as highly as the other prospects traded to the Rays, but he slashed .249/.355/.399 with 13 home runs in 477 plate appearances between High-A and Double-A last season, giving him a 123 wRC+. The outfielder also stole 64 bases in 72 attempts, ranking as MLB Pipeline’s 30th-best Oriole prospect.

That’s already a sizable package to give up, but the Competitive Balance Round A draft pick will come shortly after the first round, somewhere in the 30s. The pick will be worth around $3 million, giving the Rays a ton of bonus pool money. Simply put, what a haul for the Rays, and what’s funny about is that the trade that brought in Baz back in 2018 was also considered a haul for the Rays.
