Red Sox 3rd Baseman Alex Bregman Shows He is Close to Return in New Video

When the Boston Red Sox shocked the baseball world by trading “face of the franchise” Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants late in the day Sunday, to say that Red Sox fans were angry would be an understatement. “I woke up still mad (about the) Devers trade,” wrote one prototypical fan, Barstool Sports founder David Portnoy. “If you are trying to win you just don’t trade your best hitter for nothing in the middle of the season.”

Fair comment. The only problem with that sentiment is that Devers was not the Red Sox’ best hitter. Alex Bregman was

But Bregman strained his right quad muscle on May 24 and has been on the injured list ever since, with no set date for his return to the Boston lineup. Early reports noted that when he experienced a similar injury in 2021, Bregman — then with the Houston Astros — sat out about 10 weeks. In a new video posted online Wednesday, however, Bregman is shown in a rigorous workout with no apparent discomfort — indicating that he could be back in the Red Sox lineup sooner than that.

Though due to the quad injury, he has not appeared in as many Red Sox games as Devers did before the trade, Bregman leads Devers in most key offensive categories. His OPS is higher, at .938 to .905 for Devers. His WAR number of 2.9 also bests Devers’ 2.4.Even taking away the fact that Bregman plays the field while Devers acted only as a designated hitter for the Red Sox this season, the 31-year-old who signed with the Red Sox on a three-year, $120 million free agent contract this offseason still comes out on top. His oWAR (offense-only WAR) of 2.4 narrowly edges Devers at 2.3.

His rate of one home run every 17.9 at bats also edges Devers' rate of one per 18.1 at bats.

The question now is, having traded their second-best hitter, when will the Red Sox’ best hitter come back?“Bregman is doing well in his recovery,” wrote Spanish-language journalist Marino Pepén, who posted the Bregman Video. “He could be back in action in two weeks.”Whether Pepén’s prognostication proves correct remains to be seen. Despite the encouraging video, which appears to have been shot in an empty Fenway Park as the Red Sox are playing their current, nine-game west coast road trip, the Red Sox organization has yet to issue any official estimate for Bregman’s comeback date.
