Boston Red Sox rookie infielder Kristian Campbell has already earned the trust of his organization. Whether it be an Opening Day lineup spot, an eight-year, $60 million extension this early into his career, or now the latest development, playing first base, Campbell is quickly becoming a franchise pillar.
According to Mike Monaco of ESPN , manager Alex Cora plans to play Campbell at first this weekend against the Atlanta Braves.
Despite all of the achievements for Campbell, it has been far from a dream campaign. The 22-year-old is batting .225 with a .666 OPS and an 88 OPS+ over his first 178 at-bats. He also has five home runs, 16 RBIs, and 55 strikeouts to 23 walks.
Campbell is a natural second baseman (357 and 1/3 innings) with availability in the outfield (51 innings in center field, 12 innings in left field). Now, with Triston Casas out for the season, the Red Sox have had to scramble for a replacement.
Rafael Devers stubbornly wants to remain a designated hitter, and that seems like a mutual agreement for now. Romy González stepped in admirably, but is on the 10-day injured list. This has left Boston with Abraham Toro (99 and 2/3 innings) and Nick Sogard (84 and 2/3 innings) as the primary first basemen of late.
Even with Campbell’s month-long slump at the plate, he represents far more upside than any of the other options. The Red Sox are also financially committed to their youngster, and letting him figure it out in the batter’s box feels like the best course of action.
Campbell has shown flashes at second, especially with his ranginess, and it will be interesting to see if he can handle his new responsibilities at the three.
