After the season-ending injury to Triston Casas, the Boston Red Sox need to find a new first baseman. Whether it's internally throughout the organization, or by way of trade or free agency, the Red Sox need to make a move.
In a pre-game press conference with the media, Red Sox manager Alex Cora responded to a question about whether Rafael Devers would get a look at first base. Tom Carroll of WEEI, in a post on Twitter/X, had Cora's reaction to Devers getting a chance at first base.
.@ChrisCotillo: “We talked about the Raffy first base thing the other day. Have you had any conversations with him about it?”

Cora answered, "No," when he was asked if Devers was asked if he would try first base, and if Cora would ask Devers to try out playing at first base. Cora completely shut the Devers to first base talk down.
Devers has never played first base in his career, but with the Casas injury being a serious one, there was speculation over whether the Red Sox would try Devers out at first base.
This announcement from Cora paints a picture for the Red Sox future plans at first base. The hole that Casas left after his injury will likely be filled by a free agent, or by trade, as their current in-house options aren't likely to stop a move from being made.
In the meantime, the Red Sox will stick with Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro as their options at first base. Toro has just 11 starts at first base in his career, while Gonzalez has 19 starts at first base across his career.
Neither is a great long-term option for the Red Sox, hence the intrigue over whether Devers would transition to a first baseman's role. But, with Cora's latest announcement, the Devers to first-base experiment seems to be over before it ever started.
