The Boston Red Sox will be heading back to the postseason for the first time since 2021, ending a three-year playoff drought. Unfortunately, Boston will be shorthanded, as the club’s star rookie Roman Anthony has been sidelined since Sept. 2 after suffering a left oblique strain on an awkward swing. It came at an unfortunate time for the Red Sox, as his absence has created a hole in the lineup.

The 21-year-old left-handed slugger quickly established himself as one of the most feared hitters in the league. In 40 games after the All-Star break, Anthony owned a .311 batting average, .413 on-base percentage, .917 OPS, six home runs and 19 RBIs.

Roman Anthony Update Emerges on Sunday

Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Anthony after he initially suffered the injury to envision himself in the ALCS, as that was the best-case scenario for his possible return. “I told him to envision ALCS, first at-bat,” Cora said via MassLive’s Christopher Smith. “That’s what I told him. Just put that goal in your mind and hopefully it happens.”

The Red Sox are certainly still anticipating Anthony’s return as a huge reinforcement as they attempt to make a deep postseason run. Boston, via Cora, announced news on Sunday that Anthony along with Marcelo Mayer would both be traveling to Fort Myers (Red Sox training facility) instead of traveling with the team, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe.

This is a positive development, as Anthony likely would have been in the dugout supporting his teammates, but clearly Boston sees a possibility of him returning. He still has steps to take if he wants to come back in the postseason, and the Red Sox will also have to take care of business until he does.

The team will be careful and make sure Anthony is fully healthy, as he remains a huge part of the franchise’s future. Boston rewarded his early success in August when they inked him to an eight-year contract extension with a base value of $130 million.
